The last few years have been difficult for most small investors, but they've been especially hard on the growing numbers who are averse to risk and hungry for income. The solution for some has been to shift some money out of bonds and into blue-chip stocks that have a long history of continuous dividend payouts.
The outlook is good for dividend payouts to rise, analysts believe. Kavcic notes that as companies' profits have rebounded in the recovery, their cash holdings have piled up to exceptionally high levels, providing plenty of fuel for dividend increases. Already, after a big recessionary drop in U.S. payouts and a much smaller one in Canada, the average dividend per share has recovered to pre-recession levels in both countries.
