Given the level of uncertainty in the market, investors should be looking to recession-proof their portfolios. The U.S. economy is weak and there are a number of things that could tip it over into recession. Several main ones I am watching include: Further deterioration in consumer spending, Disorderly resolution of the European debt crisis and Slowing in China and other emerging economies. Investors with the right strategic framework and proper implementation, though, can have confidence.
In the long-term part of their portfolio, investors need stocks to grow and overcome the reduction in their purchasing power caused by inflation. The good news is that sentiment is so low that there are many stocks on sale now. I currently like high-quality companies with solid balance sheets, strong dividends and upside opportunity for earnings growth.
